Vocabulary in Context: Passages with unfamiliar words with adequate (level-appropriate) context to understand meaning can be used to highlight strategies for recognizing or ignoring unfamiliar words. Assessment and evaluation of this skill can take many forms, but emphasis should remain on helping students develop the ability to find relevant information to fill gaps in vocabulary knowledge.
Cloze Exercises: Students are provided with a transcript that is missing words (either systematically removed or words that target specific language features that make a significant difference) and complete the transcript while listening to the passage.
Transcript Marking: Students can mark a transcript with the intonation, stress, and pausing patterns they hear during a listening passage. They can then practice producing the same speech following the same patterns.
