Curriculum Portfolio

Pronunciation

Elicited Imitation: Students hear a short passage targeting a specific feature and repeat what they heard.

Phonetic and Decoding Skills: Reading Horizons strategies can be taught and practiced in conjunction with the reading teacher. Errors can be corrected through a discussion of the patterns they learn using that program.

Minimal Pairs: Specific problematic segmentals can be addressed using minimal pairs to help students recognize and produce distinctive sounds that have an impact on meaning.

Transcript Marking: Students can mark a transcript with the intonation, stress, and pausing patterns they hear during a listening passage. They can then practice producing the same speech following the same patterns.

Echo: Students listen to a video as it plays. They echo the speech in the video. This is useful in practicing suprasegmental features, such as tone, pausing, and stress.

Pronunciation-focused recordings: Students learn how to pronounce certain grammatical markers correctly (see course objectives) and use this knowledge to improve their accuracy. Teachers can facilitate this by having students practice in class and by doing pronunciation-focused recordings.
