Learning Experience Overview

Here are some suggestions for assessing vocabulary:

Guessing from ContextAlong with assessing reading comprehension, you can also include some vocabulary questions to assess students' ability to use the context of the word to guess its meaning or connect it to a similar word.

Testing a List: If students are required to learn words from a list created by the instructor or students, those words should be tested. There are various ways to assess their mastery of the words. Here are a few suggestions:

  • giving/matching to definitions
  • gap fill/cloze passage
  • giving/matching to synonyms

Word Parts: Students could be assessed on their ability to identify and understand the different parts of target words. Such assessment could include identifying prefixes, roots, and suffixes and connecting them to their meanings.
