Students should read the level-specific assigned books. These books provide a great opportunity to practice extensive reading and for the teacher to assess comprehension through assignments such as reading quizzes, logs, book reviews, summaries, analyses, reflections, reports, and other interactive and comprehension-focused activities.
Teachers have autonomy in deciding how to schedule, scaffold, and assess students' reading and comprehension. However, it should be noted that the assigned books are a resource, not course objectives. The assigned books can be used as resources to practice strategies, but should not become the main focus of the class.
