Speaking Fluency

Learning Experience Overview

Fluency Lines: The students stand in two lines facing a partner. They are given a topic and a limited amount of time to respond to it. They listen to the other partner and then one line rotates one person to the left/right. Students repeat the activity with a new partner and the goal of being able to include more (or clearer) information. This can also be done in two concentric circles.

Poster Carousels: Half of the students are given information and a picture to share and stand around the room. They show the picture and explain the information to a partner for a set amount of time and then the partners move to the next presenter. As students rotate around the room, the students presenting should be able to present the information more fully and fluently as they repeat the exercise. The presenting students would then switch with the rotating students to give everyone equal practice.

Timed Speaking: Students record themselves speaking on a topic for a limited amount of time and often a limited amount of preparation time. As a learning activity rather than an assessment, the students can listen to their recordings and practice improving it on the following attempts.
