WOOP Writing

Learning Experience Overview

The WOOP method allows students to identify an important (language learning) goal (Wish), envision what it will feel like to obtain this goal (Outcome), identify obstacles that might stand in the way of achieving the goal (Obstacle), and then make a specific plan to overcome the obstacle in an effort to move towards goal attainment. Mental imaging, brainstorming, idea selection, and summarizing are skills that are necessary for this goal-setting method. Follow-up fluency and refection writing prompts are added to complement the writing skills that are practiced in the WOOP goal formation activity.

Students will make 4 WOOP goals throughout the semester and will make a 5th WOOP goal for the weeks in-between semesters. Primary focus for these goals should be language learning, but WOOP can be used in any area of a person's life.
